Students who exhibit autistic characteristics, such as difficulty socializing and making transitions, require the visually rich structure of our TEACCH program. TEACCH (Treatment and Education of Autistic and related Communication-handicapped Children) is a program designed to facilitate independence, social interaction and self-organization.

TEACCH classrooms are highly structured, providing each student with an individualized visual schedule. Students are encouraged to follow their schedules independently, building self-confidence and self-reliance.  Each student has a semi-private work area where he or she can focus on independent work without distraction.  Built into every daily schedule are group activities designed to promote socialization.

Instruction is provided individually and in groups.. Each class is composed of six or twelve students, one master teacher and two teaching assistants. The program is available to students from grades kindergarten through twelve.

Middle and High School students in the TEACCH program are able to participate in the STARS program as well as the Regents program.  The level of participation is dependent upon each student’s ability to meet the goals of the work program or the New York State requirements for academic performance.
